Bren's own journeyman's mark — his maker's mark, forged by the old master Doss as the last work to come off his hammer. An ordinary piece of smith's work, not a thing of the old world. It's a symbolic handing-over of the forge: Doss passes the trade and the place to Bren by forging him a mark he himself will no longer need.
