A quarrelsome baker from Sowerby, about forty winters, with the largest oven in the town — swamped with work, honest in a bargain, ready to give up his oven for a good recipe. He grumbles in litanies, and by Sowerby custom it's at his place the wedding breads are baked: the hired cooks make the food in the kitchen of the host house, but the bread they bake at the baker's.
