Bren's friend, a cooper's apprentice in the workshop of Maris's father — warm-hearted, fond of beer and comfort, afraid of the forest, but once he breaks through that fear for the rescue. His contribution is knowledge, not courage: he knows Maris's habits and hiding places, and it is his memory of a childhood habit of hers that helps piece together where she fled.
