A plague that, five years before the recent events, passed through the country around Holmford and took many, among them the parents of a certain brother and sister of the village, leaving them orphans. Its memory will not lift: it has stayed in the village as a lasting fear of losing more of one's own — a fear that can push people to desperate choices. Where the plague came from and why it left, no one thereabouts can say.
