the Wool — river.
A big, slow river of the North, with a wide, boggy valley. Its mires and floodwaters make the belt of wild country between Holmford and the land of towns. The road runs toward the Wool and across it — by crossing or by causeway. "Beyond the Wool" is what folk call the northern settled country with its towns, where a man loses himself in the crowd. The Wool is a river, not a town. (Folk trace its name to the coils of mist that lie over the valley at dawn like wool.)
