An older, well-off resident of Holmford, in a house of stone, to whom Maris was to be handed over in an arranged bargain against her father's debt. He is no villain, but he was a cage to her, not an executioner. He came late to the marshes, came to see what he had done, and — seeing the cost — forgave the debt, broke off the bargain, and let the girl go free. His remorse shows the town what fear makes of people.
