A hand-held little light left behind by the Old Ones: shaken, it gives a cold, even light with no flame and no smoke. There's only one in all of Holmford — it belongs to the innkeeper Wenna, who won't sell it even to the Guild, for she can afford not to. It's remembered as "the light they came through by": it was by this that Bren's pack got through the worst night. How it truly works, no one in the village knows or asks — it's simply a thing of the old world, and its worth is measured not by its price but by the fact that it shone when the dark was deepest.
