A dyer from Sowerby, about fifty winters, father of the groom — gruff and proud of a trade the clothiers hold to be "dirty." A guild penalty from ten winters back — for a ditch-dye that ruined Sten's batch of white cloth — he carries like a wrong done to him: he holds that someone else's carelessness dumped the blame on him, and the matter was never settled. He speaks in grunts and gives way through things, not words — he'll toss on more wood, and of the wedding bread he'll only say "good." After the wedding the quarrel with the clothiers is suspended, not gone.
